Best Practice 01

Title:
“Creating Employment through Job-oriented Certificate Courses”
The Context:

One of the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) is to enhance employability for students on completion of education. Traditional UG and PG Courses have failed to provide lucrative job opportunities to the students due to the changing needs and aspirations of the industry in the global market place and increasing competition in the job market. In order to keep pace with the changing industrial and business requirements, a number of self-financed professional courses were introduced by various universities. However, these courses failed to meet the aspirations of industry. In such an environment short duration certificate courses, which mainly aim at developing certain skills among the students along with their education, are high in demand. With this perspective, the College has introduced a number of short duration Skill Enhancement Courses in collaboration with government agencies.

Objective:
To provide job-oriented certificate courses to students with an objective to create employment opportunities for them.

The Practices:
The College applied for the following two Certificate Courses offered by the University of Mumbai in the year 2010-2011.

  • Certificate Course in Direct Tax
  • Certificate Course in Accounts of Trusts and Societies

These Courses received a good response from students’ community. With few exceptions, these Courses have received more applications than the number of seats granted by the University.

Considering the success of the Mumbai University sponsored Certificate Courses, the College introduction a Certificate Course in Information Technology in association with Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation (MKCL). The Course is popularly known as Maharashtra State Certificate Course in Information Technology (MSCIT). This course has been approved by the Maharashtra Government and is one of the mandatory requirements for seeking jobs in government sector in Maharashtra. This course too received a good response.

In 2017, the College submitted a proposal for the introduction of Skill Based Courses under the Centrally Funded Scheme titled Deen Dayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Urban Livelihoods Mission’. The proposal submitted by the College was accepted and the College was granted a permission to offer various Skill Based Courses listed under the Scheme. The College chose to start the following certificate courses as per the demand from the students and local community.

  • Certificate Course in Domestic Electrician
  • Certificate Course in Courier & Logistics
  • Certificate Course in Repair & Maintenance of Personal Electronic Devices
  • Certificate Course in CNC Turning
  • Certificate Course in Banking Accounting
  • Certificate Course in DTP & Print Publishing Assistant

These courses are provided Free of Charge to students through the agency of designated private training agencies approved by the Central Government. The students are provided placement on successful completion of these Courses.

Evidence of Success:
The success rate in these Courses is 100%. On completion of the Course, the students are provided the details of the vacancies notified by various companies listed with the agency. The students contact these companies for placement and appear for interview. If found appropriate, the company provides job opportunity to such candidates. As per the records available with the Centre, about 60% of the students have been successfully placed on completion of these Courses.

Problems Encountered:
Since these courses are being run by the private agencies short-listed by the Central or the State Government on the basis of various quantitative and qualitative parameters, the programmes are well planned and equally well implemented. The major problem that was encountered by the College was to convince students to come forward and register for the courses, as many students did not want to take up additional burden of studies along with their UG and PG programme. However, with the success of courses over a period of time, the flow of students towards these courses has increased naturally.

Resources Required:
MOU with private training agencies, Classrooms, Computer Lab, Laboratory Facility as per the Course Requirements,  Skilled Faculty, Other Infrastructure, MOU with industry for placement.
